The Yakoma people have a rich history of migration, believed to have originated near Lake Chad and eventually settled in parts of present-day DRC and Central African Republic.
Authentic Yakoma knives were forged using traditional blacksmithing techniques, including hammering and punching designs into hot iron. Their knives were robust, sharpened all around, and featured wood handles bound with steel, copper or brass strips and evolved over time, with more ornate versions appearing between 1920 and 1940, reflecting shifts in cultural practices and colonial influences.
Yakoma knives were traditionally used as prestige items, especially among elders and during ceremonial events. Lighter, more decorative versions were often reserved for display during women’s initiation ceremonies and as symbols of status.
