300,00

20th century. Dimensions: 87.0 cm high × 16.0 cm wide (34.25 × 6.30 in). Weight: 1,048 g (36.97 oz)

A fine and impressive Nuna chief’s staff from Burkina Faso, featuring an openwork structure surmounted by a remarkable mythical animal. The sculpture combines zoomorphic and geometric elements in a highly stylized form characteristic of the artistic traditions of the Nuna peoples.

Carved from a single piece of wood and decorated with traditional red, black, and cream pigments, the staff displays the bold geometric patterns for which Nuna sculpture is renowned. The powerful creature emerging from the upper section appears to belong to the rich symbolic world of mythological beings that populate the oral traditions and ritual imagery of the region.

Among the Nuna, ceremonial staffs of this type were associated with authority, leadership, and social prestige. They were carried by village chiefs, elders, and respected community figures during important ceremonies and public events, serving both as emblems of status and as expressions of spiritual power.

The openwork design, the dynamic animal figure, and the vibrant painted decoration create an object of remarkable sculptural presence. Such staffs illustrate the close relationship between political authority, ancestral traditions, and symbolic representation in the cultures of western Burkina Faso.

The staff exhibits an attractive aged patina, traces of handling, and wear consistent with age and prolonged ceremonial use.

A striking and highly decorative example of West African tribal art, suitable for collectors of African sculpture, ethnographic objects, and traditional ceremonial regalia.
