9 Antique Ashanti Gold Weights – Ghana
Bronze. Weights vary in size from 1,9 to 3,1 cm. (from 0.75″ to 1.22″) and weigh from approximately 5,7 grams to 42,8 grams (from 0.2 to 1.51 oz.).
These gold weights were used to weigh gold dust mined from local streams and rivers from early early times until currency became available in the 1900’s. Each local mining area had a king or head man that developed a graduated system of weights and relative values for each weight. Some of the weights had lead added or a corner nipped off to conform to the local weight system.
