Wood. Cm. 64,5 high (25.39″); grams 1838 (4.05 lb.). Former Belgian collection.

These sculptures are ritual objects carved by blacksmith-artists, often following the indications of a divinatory rite (using cowrie shells or traces left by the fox).

In an arid region like the Bandiagara Escarpment, rain is vital for survival. These statues are used in religious rituals as instruments to attract the attention of supernatural beings and to strengthen the connection with them. They symbolize a prayer to the spirits or to the creator god Amma for water, fertility, and abundance.

They may represent ancestors, mythical figures such as the Nommo (a hermaphroditic and divine being who taught humans the word), or warriors, women with children, and twins, all linked to Dogon cosmology.
