The Tiv are an ethnic group of Bantu origin, with historical roots in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They settled in the Benue River Valley (central Nigeria) between the 16th and 17th centuries.

They believe in a supreme god called Aondo, but daily life is also influenced by other benevolent and malevolent spiritual forces.

Ancestors are revered as “living dead” who protect the family.

Today, many Tiv are Christians or Muslims, but traditional beliefs persist.

Traditional Tiv sculpture in Nigeria, especially those related to motherhood, is represented by female figures called “ihambe”, which embody venerated ancestors and serve as symbols of fertility, protection, and generational continuity.
