The Berbers are the indigenous ethnic group of North Africa, continuously distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. The name “Berber” first appeared after the fall of the Roman Empire.
Many Berbers refer to themselves using a variant of the word Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), which possibly means “free people” or “free and noble men.” Today, most Berber-speaking communities live in Morocco and Algeria.
