The Akan are an ethnic group of West Africa, composed of different populations (for example Agni, Ashanti, Fanti) widespread in the Ivory Coast and in Ghana.
In the hands of the Akan ruler all three powers are brought together: economic, political and religious represented respectively by the treasure, the saber and the throne. Gold holds great importance in traditional Akan culture; according to the traditional view, gold is a real living being with a strong and fearful spirit. Due to its exceptional nature, it is regarded with respect and reverence.
