Anthropomorphic ceremonial stool from the Marka‑Bamana cultural area, western Mali, dating to the 20th century. The stool is carved from a single block of wood and features a rectangular openwork structure with a flat, elongated seat. The supporting frame is decorated with regularly incised circular motifs running along the vertical supports and lower crossbar, creating a strong geometric rhythm. One end of the seat is surmounted by a carved anthropomorphic head, highly stylized, with simplified facial features and an emphasis on volume and profile rather than naturalistic detail. The combination of architectural form, incised decoration, and figurative element suggests a ceremonial or prestige function rather than purely domestic use. The surface shows a well‑developed patina consistent with age and handling.
