Old Beautiful Tuareg Tent Decoration – Niger
Engraved and colored leather. Approx. 77.0 cm (H) × 23.0 cm (W).
The Tuareg people inhabit a vast region encompassing most of the central and western Sahara and the north‑central Sahel. They are believed to be descended from the ancient Libyan populations of the Kingdom of the Garamantes, described by Herodotus. Traditionally, the Tuareg are predominantly nomadic. For more than two millennia, they controlled the trans‑Saharan caravan trade, linking major cities along the southern edge of the Sahara to the Mediterranean coast through five principal desert routes.
