Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa. They are distributed continuously from the Atlantic coast to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River. The name “Berber” first appeared after the end of the Roman Empire.
Many Berbers call themselves a variant of the word Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), possibly meaning “free people” or “free and noble people”. Today, most Berber-speaking communities live in Morocco and Algeria.
