Old Borana Milk Jug – Gorfa – South Ethiopia
65,00€
20th century. Leather, vegetal fibers, metal wire. Height 33.0 cm ( 12.99 inches ). Weight 511.2 g ( 18.03 oz ).
This gorfa is a traditional milk container used for storing fresh or curdled milk among pastoral communities of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. The rounded body is made entirely of leather, carefully stitched and showing a deep patina consistent with prolonged use.
The neck is decorated with woven vegetal fibers arranged in horizontal bands with simple geometric motifs, incorporating fine metal wire elements. A braided fiber band reinforces the junction between the body and the neck. The interior is clean and stable, with no residual odors, making the object suitable for collection, display, or storage.
The Borana, Gabbra, and Sakuye peoples—closely related groups within the wider Oromo cultural sphere—share similar pastoral traditions in which milk plays a central role. Containers such as the gorfa are essential household objects, valued for both functionality and restrained decoration.
