The Frafra, also known as Gurene, are a Gur‑speaking people inhabiting northeastern Ghana, particularly the Upper East Region, with related groups extending into southern Burkina Faso. They form part of the broader Gurunsi cultural sphere, sharing linguistic and social affinities with neighboring groups.

Traditionally, Frafra society was organized into small, autonomous lineage-based communities, without centralized political authority. Social cohesion was maintained through kinship ties, ancestral veneration, and ritual practices connected to the land.

Frafra religious life is centered on a complex system of earth shrines (tengbana) and ancestral cults. These shrines play a key role in regulating agricultural cycles, conflict resolution, and communal well-being. Figurative objects and ritual implements—often cast in bronze or carved in wood—were not decorative but functional, serving as mediators between the human and spiritual worlds.

Despite centuries of external pressure, including slave raids by neighboring states and later colonial rule, the Frafra have retained a strong sense of cultural continuity, particularly visible in their rituals, oral traditions, and material culture.
