The Berbers are the indigenous ethnic group of North Africa, continuously distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. The term “Berber” first appeared after the fall of the Roman Empire. Many Berbers refer to themselves as Imazighen (singular: Amazigh), a word possibly meaning “free people” or “free and noble men.” Today, most Berber-speaking communities live in Morocco and Algeria.
