These wallets, traditionally worn around the neck or under robes, range from simple leather rectangles to elaborate multi-piece pouches within folders. This wallet pulls apart to reveal three inner pouches made of incised leather.

The Tuareg people inhabit a vast region covering most of the central and western Sahara and the north-central Sahel. They are likely descendants of the ancient Libyan Garamantes, described by Herodotus. Mostly nomadic, the Tuareg operated trans-Saharan caravan routes for over two millennia, linking the great cities on the southern edge of the Sahara to the Mediterranean coast via five major trade routes.
