Old Kuba Raffia Cloth – BUSHOONG – DR Congo
Early to mid 20th century. Raffia Vinifera fibers. Approximately cm. 75,0 x cm. 58,0 (22.83 x 18.90 inches). Very fine fabric and beautiful designs; due to use and age the fabric has some holes and some stains (see photos).
The Kuba (or Bakuba) peoples are famous for producing beautiful fabrics made from fibers of the palm Raphia Vinifera by a long and complex process that includes the participation of men, women and children belonging to the same family. Each piece must be soaked,beaten, and then worked and scraped by hand, so as to assume its typical characteristics of fine silk-like.
