The Tuareg place great importance on amulets and symbols. The Khomissar is part of a tradition that blends:
– Islam (particularly Sufi mysticism)
– Animism and ancestral beliefs
– Saharan cosmology.
The Khomissar, in the form of a stylized hand, is believed to ward off the evil eye and, being made of shells, doubles as a fertility symbol.
