These two traditional Turkana containers originate from northern Kenya and reflect the practical needs of a nomadic pastoral society. Among the Turkana, small portable containers made from horn, leather, and metal were used to carry essential personal items during daily movements across the arid landscape. Snuff was commonly carried in horn containers for personal and social use, while salt was a valuable commodity that could be stored and transported in durable leather containers.
The Turkana are one of Kenya’s largest pastoral communities. Living in a harsh semi-arid environment characterized by low rainfall and scarce natural resources, they traditionally relied on livestock herding and seasonal mobility. Practical objects such as these containers were designed to be lightweight, durable, and easy to carry during long journeys, making them well suited to a nomadic way of life.
Both pieces show signs of age and use consistent with traditional tribal ownership and represent authentic examples of Turkana material culture from East Africa.
