Mauritania takes its name from the ancient Berber kingdom that flourished from the 3rd century BC and later became the Roman province of Mauretania, which endured until the 7th century AD.

Despite its prevailing Arab identity, Mauritanian society is multiethnic.

Bidhan (“white Moors”) make up about 30% of the population.
Haratin (“black Moors”) comprise roughly 40%.

Both groups reflect a fusion of Arab and Berber ethnicity, language, and culture. The remaining 30% consists of various sub‑Saharan ethnic communities.
