The Amazigh Of Southern Morocco: The Tachelhit Tribes

The Tachelhit Tribes are very numerous. There is no single “official” list of all the Tachelhit (Chleuh) tribes, because there are more than 200, organized into tribal confederations spread across Souss, the southwestern High Atlas, and the Anti-Atlas. All of them speak Tashelhit, the most widely spoken Amazigh language in Morocco (6–8 million speakers).

The main historical confederations are as follows:

Ida Oultite Confederation

  • Tribes: Ida Ou Nadif, Ida Ou Semlal, Aït Imerhrane, Aït Akka, Ida Ou Gougmar, Ida Ou Zeddout.
  • Area: Anti-Atlas (Tafraoute, Tiznit).

Aït Baamrane Confederation

  • Tribes: Aït Baamrane (historical group), near Sidi Ifni.
  • Area: Southern Souss, towards Guelmim.

Haha Confederation

  • Tribes: Ida Ou Gnidif, Ida Ou Tanane, Ida Ou Gourd, Ida Ou Gnidif.
  • Area: Atlantic coast between Essaouira and Agadir.

Ida Ou Tanane Confederation

  • Tribes: Ida Ou Tanane (same name), Ida Ou Gnidif.
  • Area: North of Agadir.
