The Arsi, also known as Arussi, are a subgroup of the Oromo people, the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. They descend from the Sikkoo-Mandoo branch of the Barento Oromo.

Despite cultural and linguistic similarities with other Oromo groups, the Arsi maintain unique traditions and a strong connection to the land. Their culture is deeply rooted in rural life, Islamic spirituality, and respect for traditional social structures.

The Arsi have a long history of resistance against the Ethiopian Empire, particularly during the military campaigns of Menelik II between 1881 and 1886. This resistance was both military and cultural, helping preserve Arsi identity during a time of imperial expansion.

At the heart of Arsi society is the Gadaa system, one of the oldest cyclical governance systems in the world:

  • It organizes social and political life into eight-year cycles.
  • Each cycle assigns rotating roles and responsibilities to members of the community.
  • It includes stages from youth to leadership and elderhood.
  • The Gadaa system is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
