The Lobi are an ethnic group originally from Ghana, who settled in the southwest of Burkina Faso and parts of Côte d’Ivoire. Their name comes from two words in the Lobiri language: lou (forest) and bi (children), meaning “children of the forest.”
For the Lobi, the serpent symbolizes protection, connection with ancestors, and transition between worlds. It is linked to the Mouhoun River (also known as the Black Volta), which is considered a kind of boundary between the world of the living and the world of spirits, similar to the River Styx in Roman mythology.
