The Borana are a major subgroup of the Oromo, a Cushitic‑speaking pastoral people living in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. They are renowned for their Gadaa system—an age‑grade socio‑political structure recognized by UNESCO—which regulates political authority, social organization, and ritual life. Traditionally semi‑nomadic, the Borana rely heavily on cattle herding and maintain a strong cultural identity rooted in mobility, lineage continuity, and ancestral customs.
