The Kuba (or Bakuba) peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are renowned for their superb textiles woven from raffia palm (Raphia vinifera) fibers. The production of these fabrics follows a long and complex process that traditionally involves men, women, and children within the same family group.

Each piece undergoes successive stages of soaking, beating, and careful handworking; the fibers are then scraped and polished to achieve their distinctive softness and refined, silk-like appearance.
