350,00€
Early to mid‑20th century. Height: 13.0 cm (5.12″). Base width: 7.3 cm (2.87″). Weight: 160.5 g (5.66 oz)
Cast bronze snuff ring used for the preparation and inhalation of powdered tobacco (snuff). The object consists of a decorated cylindrical base supporting a vertical shaft surmounted by a shallow circular dish. The base is enriched with finely incised geometric motifs and flanked by two small stylized animal figures, a characteristic feature of Tiv metalwork.
Snuff rings of this type were personal and communal utensils associated with social interaction and status, reflecting the importance of snuff-taking in Tiv daily life and ritual practices. The piece shows a well-developed patina and surface wear consistent with age and prolonged use.
Comparable examples are preserved in major museum collections, including the British Museum, London.
