A beautiful old Bamun bronze crucifix from Cameroon, dating to the 1940s. The piece represents a remarkable example of the encounter between Christian iconography and the artistic traditions of the Bamun Kingdom, one of the most important cultural centers of western Cameroon.

Cast in bronze using traditional techniques, the crucifix depicts Christ with outstretched arms and a highly stylized face characterized by elongated features, prominent eyes, and a finely rendered beard. The figure reflects the distinctive aesthetic vocabulary of Bamun metalwork while preserving the essential symbolism of the Christian crucifix.

The geometric treatment of the body, the decorative patterns on the garment, and the expressive modeling of the head give the sculpture a strong visual presence and a unique sculptural quality. Such pieces were produced during the colonial and early missionary period, when local craftsmen incorporated Christian themes into established artistic traditions.

The bronze exhibits an attractive aged patina and wear consistent with age and use.

A fine example of African Christian art, combining religious symbolism with the distinctive style of Bamun bronze casting.
