The Noo masks are traditionally associated with healers and ritual specialists among certain Senufo communities. Characterized by their distinctive helmet form and symbolic motifs, they are believed to embody protective and spiritual forces.

The Senufo peoples comprise more than thirty related groups occupying a vast region that spans present-day Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Despite local variations in language and custom, they share important cultural institutions, including the renowned Poro society.

Among Senufo men, participation in the Poro initiation system has traditionally played a central role in social and spiritual life. Through a series of initiation stages and rituals, members acquire knowledge, discipline, and a deeper understanding of community values. Ceremonies associated with these initiations often involve masquerades, music, and performances that reinforce social cohesion and mark the transition to greater responsibility and status within the community.

The iconography of Senufo masks frequently combines human and animal elements, expressing ideals of wisdom, spiritual power, protection, and transformation.
