Dhokra art takes its name from the nomadic Dhokra Damar tribe, native mainly to the states of West Bengal and Odisha. Odisha was one of the most important centers of Dhokra craftsmanship in India. Although we find traces of Dhokra art throughout the Indian subcontinent, the tribes who primarily practiced Dhokra art settled in the interior and rural areas of this state, where they honed their skills to perfection. Initially, artisanal Dhokra products were manufactured in many districts of Odisha including Puri, Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Sambalpur, Ganjam and Phulbani.
