The Tuareg people inhabit a vast region encompassing much of the central and western Sahara and the north-central Sahel. They are generally considered descendants of the ancient Libyan peoples, including the Garamantes, whose kingdom was described by Herodotus. The Tuareg are predominantly nomadic. For more than two millennia, they played a central role in the trans-Saharan caravan trade, linking the great cities along the southern edge of the Sahara with the Mediterranean coast of North Africa through a network of major desert routes.
