The Tuareg people inhabit a large area, covering almost all the central and western Sahara and the north‑central Sahel. They are probably descended from the ancient Libyan populations of the Garamantian kingdom, described by Herodotus. The Tuareg are predominantly nomadic. For over two millennia, they operated the trans‑Saharan caravan routes connecting the major cities along the southern edge of the desert to the northern Mediterranean coast via five trade corridors.
