Ndop Tunic – Bamileke – Cameroon
First half 20th century. Indigo dyed cotton made from lots of small strips sewn together. Approx. cm 90,0 x cm 90,0 (35.93″ x 35.93″). Some damage due to age and use (see photos).
For similar example see page 186 of “African Textiles: color and creativity across a continent” by John Gillow.
The sewn and indigo-dyed cloth called ndop is used in a variety of large robes, mask costumes and display pieces. Chiefs reserved such tunics for their court assistants.
