Antique Shield – AMHARA – SIDAMO – Ethiopia
End 19th century, early 20th century. Engraved buffalo or hippopotamus skin. Diameter cm. 50,0 (19.69″). Excellent general conditions; just an old cut of a spear (see photos)

The region Amhara is extends over the ancient provinces of Bégemder, Godjam and includes a part of the ancient province of Wollo. The Amhara people speak about ” the Amharic “, official language of Ethiopia.
Amhara shields in former times were carried by the Kaffa, a member of the Sidamo group. The shield is surrounded by a thick rim which is supposed to prevent a spear or blade from sliding off it. Leather bindings were used from the back through the front to reinforce the shield.
