325,00€
First half of the 20th century or earlier. Yellow cast alloy (brass) and wood. Height: 61 cm (24.02 in). Blade (flame): 14.7 cm long (5.79 in). Weight: 744 g (26.25 oz).
A beautiful Fon recade showing a rich old usage patina and in excellent condition, with no age‑related damage. This ceremonial recade features a long, slightly kinked wooden shaft, darkened by age and handling, and articulated by several applied brass bands. The upper section terminates in a sculptural brass blade in the form of a stylized flame, with pointed, serrated projections suggesting movement and rising energy. The surface of the blade is enriched by incised and punched decoration, enhancing its visual rhythm.
Among the Fon, the recade functions as a sceptre and prestige object, as well as a cult and dance axe. Derived from earlier battle‑axe forms, recades serve as symbolic “coats of arms” for specific clans and lineages, expressing the origin, authority, and ritual legitimacy of their owners.
In this example, the blade takes the form of a three‑dimensional fish with a wide open mouth, cast in yellow alloy using the lost‑wax (waste‑mould) technique. The blade is mounted on a long, kinked wooden shaft. At the top of the shaft are two additional brass sheet‑metal eyes, while on the upper third of the reverse side sits an egg‑shaped element in cast brass, which may also be interpreted as a highly abstracted head. The wooden shaft is further decorated with tree bark, enhancing the object’s ritual character.
Together, these elements underline the recade’s role as a powerful emblem of political authority, ancestral legitimacy, and ritual power within Fon society.
