199,95€
Carved hardwood with leather grip. Weight 648 g ( 22.86 oz / 1.43 lbs ). Height 54.5 cm ( 21.46 inches ); 55.0 cm ( 21.65 inches ) including the custom metal stand.
This well‑preserved Maasai rungu from East Africa is carved from a single piece of dense hardwood and displays the characteristic globular striking head and gently curved shaft typical of traditional Maasai clubs. The surface shows a rich, naturally aged patina, developed through prolonged handling and use.
Particularly noteworthy is the leather‑wrapped grip applied to the shaft. This element, secured with traditional stitching, was intended to improve handling and control, especially during prolonged use, while also enhancing comfort and grip. Such leather coverings are consistent with functional adaptations seen on authentic Maasai. Despite signs of age and use, the club remains structurally solid and well balanced.
Among the Maasai of Kenya and northern Tanzania, the rungu served multiple functions: as a weapon for personal defense, a tool for protecting cattle, and a powerful symbol of authority and social status. It was commonly carried by moran (young warriors) as well as elders, embodying strength, responsibility, and leadership within Maasai society.
Presented on a custom metal stand, this rungu combines sculptural elegance with strong ethnographic significance.
