Tuareg Assrou n’ Swoul: The Key Thrown Over the Shoulder

Among the most distinctive ornaments of Tuareg material culture is the Assrou n’ Swoul (also spelled Asrou n Swoul), combining practical function with fine craftsmanship. Its name is commonly translated as“the key thrown over the shoulder,” referring to its characteristic key-like form and the way it is worn.

Attached to a corner of a woman’s head-cloth and hanging down the back, it acts as a counterweight to keep the fabric in place. More elaborate examples transform this practical object into a striking personal ornament and may also reflect the wearer’s wealth and prestige.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of the Assrou n’ Swoul is its extraordinary variety. No single form defines the type.

Traditionally made by Tuareg metalworkers, these objects often combine contrasting materials such as brass, copper, iron or steel, silver or white metal, sometimes together with wood, ebony or other materials. More elaborate pieces may incorporate applied metal elements, raised studs, engraving, openwork, articulated parts and contrasting inserts. The resulting objects are striking exercises in geometry and balance.

The unusual silhouette of many Assrou n’ Swoul closely resembles the large decorative keys associated with traditional Tuareg locks, including those used for leather camel bags. Whether the veil weight developed directly from an actual key is less certain. Interestingly, some simpler examples incorporate groups of real keys, while certain forms from Mali feature European keys suspended from chains.

Large and elaborate examples coexist with much smaller and more sober forms; some are densely engraved, while others derive their beauty almost entirely from construction, silhouette and the contrast between different metals.

The examples illustrated on this page show the remarkable diversity of Assrou n’ Swoul in form, size, materials and decoration.
