The Tuareg are a Berber population that inhabits the center of the Sahara, known for being the most indomitable, marked by strong traditions of ethnic background. Tuareg is an Arabic word which means “without God”; they prefer to be called “Imazighen” which in Berber means “free men”. I Tuareg sono un popolo berbero che abita il centro del Sahara, famoso per essere il più indomito dei popoli del deserto, caratterizzato da forti tradizioni di appartenenza etnica. Tuareg è una parola araba che significa “i senza Dio”; per questo essi preferiscono essere chiamati “Imazighen” che in berbero significa “uomini liberi”. Il popolo Tuareg è suddiviso in 21 tribù (kel) ed ogni tribù ha un territorio di riferimento ed una propria croce. Le croci sono portate indistintamente da uomini o donne. Hanno significati magici (valenza protettiva), ma anche politici (appartenenza ad una tribù e reminescenza storica di un passato cristiano che il popolo berbero presenta come rivalsa all’islam ed agli invasori arabi).
